Materialism
Far too often in our American culture, both Christians and non-Christians alike seek fulfillment in earthly comforts and material possessions more than in Jesus. The truth is that most of us have been blessed with far more than we need to survive, and to some extent, the fact that we cling so dearly to our blessings is also a reflection of our desire to “insulate” ourselves against our fear of the unknown – against our need to trust in God to provide for us in the face of uncertainty. The problem is that, apart from a relationship with God that’s based on faith in Him, every human being has a “God-sized hole" that causes us to feel anxious, afraid and unfulfilled, and that hole can never be filled with more “stuff”. (cf. Prov. 30:7-9; Acts 20:35b; 1 Tim. 6:17-19)
