The Messenger

Greetings to our guests!

It is a privilege to have you join the people of St. Matthew in our time with God this weekend.  If you have questions about this or anything else, please stop by our Welcome Center.  Feel free to check out anything that might interest you in this Messenger or on our website:  www.st-matthew.org

From the Pastors:

  • Thanks to all who submitted suggestions for the summer sermon series, “Because You Asked...”  We received many more suggestions than we have dates.  Some suggestions will be incorporated in future sermons.  Here are the selections for the rest of this summer:
    • August 18- “Why God uses suffering to test and to teach?”
    • August 25- “Can one lose salvation?”
    • September 1- “Is it okay for Christians to use marijuana?”
  • God moved St. Matthew in the fall of 2012 to embrace a so-called 20/20 Vision:

By 2020 St. Matthew will be developing vibrant, missional Christ-followers in a post-Christian America

St. Matthew’s Vision Leadership Team (President Matt Jerue, Ray Riggs, Jeff Whitaker, Mark Schafer, and the pastors) prayerfully set the following new 20/20 Strategic Priorities for this school year:

    • Developing vibrant, missional Christ-followers by:
      •    Begin discerning vision for future [replacing 20/20 Vision]
      •    Increase number of people who regularly do personal reflective Bible study and are in a small group or group Bible study
      •    If approved, implement the Neighbors Café when the Wixom Pastor is in place.
      •    Share the arts of spiritual conversations to coincide with a potential start of Neighbors Café, if approved.
      •    Raise up Celebrate Recovery
      •    Develop funding through the Foundation Ministry to provide partial funding for a full-time missionary with a goal of providing support to a missionary within three years
      •    Increase safety on our campuses
      •    NLSA for school and preschool
      •    fill staff vacancies
      •    Develop and implement summer children and youth ministry programs at both campuses

It is our fervent hope and prayer that God will powerfully work in and through us toward the fulfillment of that 20/20 Vision!

  • There will be a memorial service for Gladys Stimmel, mother of Sandy Ulmer on Saturday, August 31 at 11am at the Walled Lake campus, preceded by a 10am visitation.

  • There will be a memorial service for Irene Park on Saturday, September 14 at 11:30am at the Wixom campus, preceded by an 11am visitation.

  • Wixom Fall Celebration, September 8 - The annual Wixom Fall Celebration will be held on Sunday, September 8.  Worship will be moved from 9am to 10am, from inside to outside, weather permitting.  A church picnic will be held after worship.  Members with last names A-M are asked to bring side dishes or salads. Members with last names N-Z are asked to bring desserts. There will be inflatables and the balloon lady for the children.  Volunteers for set up and clean up are asked to contact Bonnie Tura.

  • Neighbor’s Café Open Forums and Congregational Assembly Over the last four years, the Bridge Ministry has been working to create a ministry that (1) gets out into the community (2)  meets a basic need  of people in the community and (3) builds  a relationship with those people with the ultimate goal of sharing Jesus. Following a model that was very successful at Messiah Lutheran Church in Midland and aligns with our 20/20 Vision, the Bridge Ministry has developed and refined a proposal for a new ministry at St Matthews called Neighbors Café. This café would provide food, friendship, and support to anyone that visits. The Suspended Meals offered would provide meals to those who have a need for a no cost meal.  It is our hope that through this friendship, a relationship with Jesus can begin. You are invited to hear more about this at a one of the Open Forum meetings listed below:

    • Wixom Campus | Sunday, September 15 | 10:20AM
    • Walled Lake Campus | Sunday, September 15 | 12:30PM
    • Walled Lake Campus | Wednesday, September 18 | 7PM
    • Then a special Congregational Assembly will be held on October 6 at 12:30 pm at Walled Lake to take action on the proposal, which will require a two-thirds favorable majority for approval.

It has been brought to our attention that the Federal Trade Commission is now alerting consumers to a nationwide scam in which hackers pose as church leaders, often asking for money or gift cards. Local churches have been affected by this scam. Please see this recent news report from WXYZ: https://www.wxyz.com/news/scammers-pose-as-waterford-township-pastor-to-....

Looking for an opportunity to use your gifts and talents to serve in ministry? Check out the biggest needs listed below for International ministry. We offer over 20 different classes 5 days a week to reach out to our International friends in the area. Classes listed below don't fit your schedule or gift set? No problem, contact Jan Roth (jan.roth@st-matthew.org) to find the best fit for you!

This Tuesday at Celebrate Recovery, Ryan will lead us in presenting the FORGIVENESS lesson in continuing work on Principle 6 and Step 8 and introducing Step 9. I think we all agree that forgiveness is a beautiful idea until we have to practice it. “To err is human; to forgive is not company policy,” is one of many jokes about forgiveness, but forgiveness is not something we can take lightly in our recoveries because forgiveness is clearly God’s prescription for the broken. The inability to accept and offer forgiveness can block, stall or even destroy our recoveries.

Do you love spending time with and nurturing young children?  St. Matthew is currently accepting applications for Infant and Preschool Caregivers at its Hearts & Hands Christian Child Center at the Wixom Campus. Part-time, Monday thru Friday. If interested, please contact Ronda Coe at 248.624.9525 or Ronda.Coe@st-matthew.org.

Do you love working with children? Looking for an enjoyable way to earn some extra cash during school hours? Our Walled Lake Nursery might be your answer. We are looking to hire two part time Nursery Workers who will help to care for God’s littlest ones, weekdays throughout the school year. Hours are flexible to your schedule, but there will be an immediate need for workers on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Job description and applications are available at the Walled Lake Welcome Desk and at the Wixom front desk. Please contact Jocelyn Prewett with any questions or inquiries.

St. Matthew is reaching out with the love of Christ to make a difference in the lives of children across the world! We're sponsoring a team of six to run the 5K, Half-Marathon, and Marathon in Detroit this October with Team World Vision--provide safe, clean drinking water to the most vulnerable children in the world, helping them to live life in all its fullness. This month, we're asking YOU to consider making a donation to bring hope and healing to children, to families, and to communities.

We currently have Friday shifts available - both morning and afternoon, as well as Tuesday afternoons.
